Spun! by J.L. Merrow6/12/2023
"The wild animals were my solace, my companions and my sanity, and because of them I was never entirely alone," she writes. While mourning her husband, the author found solace in her conservation efforts. Unexpectedly widowed, Sheldrick founded the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to continue her husband's legacy of fighting to protect elephants, rhinos and other animals from poachers. In 1976, David was given a supervisory role over all of Kenya's parks, and the couple relocated to National Nairobi Park-sadly, David died of a heart attack a year later. An internationally recognized and awarded expert in animal husbandry, Sheldrick is the first person to have perfected the milk formula for baby elephants and rhinos and the first person to have hand-reared newborn elephants. As co-wardens of the park from 1955 to 1976, they devoted an enormous amount of energy campaigning against the ivory industry and to raising and reintegrating orphaned animals back into the wild. Sheldrick felt an instant attraction to David, 15 years her senior, and a major arc of the book follows their love story and marriage. The two met again on her following visit a few years later, when she was newly married with an infant daughter. A heartfelt memoir about the author's decades-long efforts to save baby elephants.Īt 17, the author traveled to Kenya's Tsavo National Park, one of the world's largest game reserves, and briefly met David Sheldrick, the park's first warden. 99 mine by sally thorne6/12/2023 “I’m just going to get more … register rolls.” She vanishes out back in a puff of gardenia body spray. She’s too new at this, and she’s feeling their eyes. Alpha Boy remembers I have full control of the alcohol. The laugh fades out of him a little as I narrow my eyes and stare harder. My name is Darcy and he’s unknowingly made a Jane Austen joke. “Hey there, mister,” he responds-a jab at my short haircut-and his friends laugh and intone, “Ohhhh shit.” Weird how we have the most trouble when this type of boy walks in. Nobody taught me this when I first started as a bartender, but luckily, I was a quick learner: When a group of men are walking in, you should work out which one is the alpha. John langan the fisherman review6/11/2023 Langan’s tale is a heady old story within a story, but one that claims a far reaching, epic scope that traces threads to the “old country” and reaches to the modern day. It will only lead them ever deeper to face what they have lost and ask if they are willing to pay whatever price to reclaim it. Soon, the two men find themselves amidst a story that is similar to their own in tragedy, but far more fantastical and dark. In upstate New York, there is the Dutchman’s Creek, which flows from the Ashokan Reservoir, only not many have heard of this creek and the few that have…there’s nothing good that comes from it. Oh and it should be noted it won the 2016 Bram Stoker for best novel!įollowing Abe and Dan, two widowers, who have found one another’s love for fishing a place of fellowship, are lured by a mysterious creek. Few books really nail the mythic scope of Lovecraft, but John Langan’s THE FISHERMAN, goes far deeper, while the tentacles of cosmic horror writhes around it. Gone Rogue by A. McKay6/11/2023 showing that publicly is dangerous and 2. Also people in general are less naive and do not trust that blindly the propaganda, but 1. Propaganda should blame enemies of the state for problems or try to do other, less stupid spin. That is kind of dumb and is not how 1984 works. You will find a lot of in-game propagada written like "You daily allotment of food is reduced, which is great, praise the government!", or there are too many people who naively and sincirely belive the government. Another problem with it is that it is a wrong and unnatural 1984. The weakest part for me is the setting - it is 1984-like and I do not like grim settings. Even then I enjoyed playing the missions a lot. The though the level design is not perfect and there are areas which feel too linear. At the same times the mechanics and perks are numerous and in general missions allow different approaches. The game mehanics are both polished and well written in tutorials and perk descriptions, so you will not have to resort to a lot of trial and error to understand it. A great game which very much reminds me The String! from 2001. The amazing maurice book6/11/2023 Here's a look into the nitty gritty of the kitties (and rats) of "The Amazing Maurice," released in Europe in late 2022 and in North American movie theaters on February 3, 2022. In the movie, after being beaten down by Keith, Maurice gets his mind back and then chooses to kill Spider, which shows how little movie Maurice really cares about killing things that can think. In 2019, production on an animated feature adaptation of "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" began (via Animation World Network), and while it may not have received the pre-release attention as films by the likes of Disney, Sony, or DreamWorks, there's plenty to enjoy. In the book, Spider, still at his strongest, makes the mistake of suppressing Maurice’s thinking mind and unleashing his inner cat, which then eats him. The book remains amongst Pratchett's most acclaimed work, even winning the accomplished author his first major literary award, the Carnegie Medal. One of the award's judges, Karen Usher, would even say of Pratchett's novel, "This is an outstanding work of literary excellence – a brilliant twist on the tale of the Pied Piper that is funny and irreverent, but also dark and subversive" (via The Guardian). The film is based on the 2001 novel, "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents," by late British author Terry Pratchett, the 28th installment in Pratchett's satirical fantasy series "Discworld" and also the first of the series geared to children. A playwright of some renown, Sidda has recently been the subject of a Time magazine article that mentions her troubled childhood (including mom’s alcoholism, physical abuse, abandonment, and basic cantankerousness) as a possible source for her art. Structured as a series of flashbacks, the film, following this charming childhood scene, provides the requisite jumpstart crisis in the relationship between the de facto leader of the Ya-Yas, Vivi (now grown up to be Ellen Burstyn) and her daughter, Sidda (Sandra Bullock). But while the books are surely beloved and first-time director Callie Khouri, best known as the writer of Thelma & Louise, comes with all sorts of girl powery credentials, her new movie is worn out before it begins. The girls cut their palms (slightly), press them to one another’s, in order to form a blood-flow circle, then raise their voices in unison: “Loyalty forever! Ya-Ya!” Sparks fly up from the flames, the camera pulls out, and yet another ensemble chick flick is born.īased on Rebecca Wells’ popular novels, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Little Altars Everywhere, this particular flick is adeptly positioned as counter-programming to the summer’s action pix. The camera pans their sweet, illuminated faces as they exchange significant glances, and the ritual begins. On a dark and unstormy night, four young girls gather round a small campfire in the woods. The drinking man tells the young woman to put a record on. They haggle a little over prices and buy a TV and a bed. A young couple stops by to select furniture for their new apartment. The reader gets the feeling that he may be selling all his possessions, looking to start life anew. It tells the story of a drinking man overseeing his yard sale. The Quarterly West version incorporated many of Lish's suggested changes, while the final version was 9% shorter. The story was first published in Quarterly West in Autumn 1978 and later in The Paris Review in Spring 1981. In 1977, Carver submitted a story with this title to Esquire, which Gordon Lish subsequently edited and retitled "I Am Going to Sit Down", but no version ever appeared in Esquire. Considered by many one of American literature's most ambitious short-story collections, it was this collection that turned Raymond Carver into a household name in the publishing industry. What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is a 1981 collection of short stories by American writer Raymond Carver, as well as the title of one of the stories in the collection. |
